Abstract
Objectives£ºThe aim of this study was to investigate the ability to infer others¡¯ intentions and emotions, i.e. Theory of mind(ToM), in schizophrenic patients.

Methods£ºTwenty-three patients with schizophrenia and 30 healthy matched controls were administrated to ToM tasks, as assessed by the False-Belief Task, the Hinting Task and the Eye Task. All participants also underwent computerized versions of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, as the measure of working memory.

Results£ºThe schizophrenic group performed poorly on ToM tasks relative to controls. There was no significant correlation among the performances of ToM tasks in the schizophrenic group. We also couldn¡¯t find any relations between ToM performance and working memory within schizophrenic group.

Conclusions£ºThese data suggest that schizophrenic patients have a specific deficit of the cognitive ability referred to as ToM, that the intention-inferring ability and the emotion-inferring ability are different processes, and that impaired working memory does not account for the deficits of ToM in schizophrenia.
